Most meat eaters don't concur with the perspectives or way of life decisions or vegans. As of late, notwithstanding, the act of denying of meat utilization has taken on new life predominantly on account of obvious new confirmation of its medical advantages and a changing social view that is bit by bit growing to incorporate the privileges of creatures. Regardless of its fast development, the veggie lover belief system stays a to a great extent disputable subject for some Americans. Its abrupt prevalence in the peculator leaves numerous eager meat-eaters scrutinizing the legitimacy of Its advantages and attempting to shield their lifestyle which has been around since mountain men. While meat utilization in America is rising, vegetarianism is prospering its very own astonishing prevalence. A survey as of late directed b y Time Magazine appraises that ten million Americans believe themselves to be veggie lovers, and an extra twenty million state that they have ââ¬Å"flirtedâ⬠with vegetarianism at some point before (Corrals).A separate review found that schools and colleges are Increasingly offering meatless suppers to their understudies trying to stay aware of the expanding request among youthful vegans. Truth be told, in an ongoing overview of twelve to multi year olds, 20% of the considerable number of respondents and 28 percent of the female respondents depicted vegetarianism as ââ¬Å"inâ⬠(Irvine). While numerous pundits excuse this gratefulness for the possibility of a plant-based eating regimen as a brief social pattern, that is not really the case.Eating meat is a training that causes various wellbeing dangers and negatively affects the earth, all to the detriment of the enduring of Innocent animals. Society all in all eventual better served In making a change to a more advantage ous, less fierce veggie lover way of life. Such a change would leave the world a superior spot, profiting our earth and our wellbeing just as expanding our consciousness of our general surroundings. One of the most significant purposes behind our general public to acknowledge vegetarianism is the harm that meat creation causes to the environment. While most Americans don't understand It, eating and delivering meat rouses an inefficient abuse of the world's important assets, leaving an UN-possess the earth, multiple times the quantity of people (Motivational). In the U. S. Alone animals dwarf individuals twenty-five to one. The measure of room required to raise every one of these creatures is gigantic (Corrals). In South America, around seventy thousand sections of land of rainforest's are wrecked each day to make land for dairy cattle to munch (Hurley 40), and the utilization of the land Is wasteful to such an extent that It Is evaluated that a solitary veggie lover will spare a sect ion of land of trees each year. The huge number of creatures reproduced for food go to the washroom at a pace of 87,000 pounds for each second, or around 20 tons of fertilizer for each year for each U. S. Family unit, which is all in the long run steered to waterways ND streams. The issue is terrible to such an extent that the Environmental Protection Agency has expressed that creature excrement ââ¬Å"pollutes American conduits more than all other mechanical sources combinedâ⬠(Motivational). Present day cultivating techniques likewise devour water and non-renewable energy sources at a disturbing rate. It requires just 2,000 liters of water to create an in meat (Corrals). The measure of waste is upsetting. In his book The Food Revolution, John Robbins states ââ¬Å"you'd spare more water by not eating one pound of California hamburger than you would by not showering for a whole yearâ⬠(Metallic). The creation f meat additionally requires gigantic measures of non-renewable e nergy source, devouring around multiple times what it would take to deliver a similar measure of plant protein and around multiple times the fuel required to deliver an equivalent measure of grain (Hurley). Incidentally, the vegetable business likewise squanders gigantic measures of food. The measure of grain devoured by America's domesticated animals, around multiple times the grain devoured by people in the U. S. , could take care of 800 million individuals (Corrals). Jean Mayer, a nutritionist at Harvard, assesses that a decrease in meat utilization by the American individuals by Just ten later would deliver enough grain to take care of 60 million individuals (Metallic), and previous Environmental Minister of India Manage Gandhi is cited as saying, ââ¬Å"Were all of [the grain took care of to livestock] expended legitimately by people, it would sustain five fold the number of individuals as it does subsequent to being changed over into meat, milk and eggsâ⬠(Hurley 40).The i ssue is exacerbated by the way that meat creation is such a wasteful utilization of land, while a ten-section of land homestead could bolster 60 individuals developing soybeans or 24 individuals developing wheat, a similar ten sections of land could bolster just two individuals raising cows (Metallic). The argument against eating meat is additionally fortified by the excess of logical proof behind the medical advantages of a veggie lover way of life. The reason that veggie lover eats less carbs are healthfully missing is a typical confusion; in any case, the logical proof backings an end to the contrary. The USDA and sustenance specialists the same have adulated vegetarianism for its medical advantages (Hurley 39); truth be told, research has demonstrated that for some individuals the medical advantages of a vegan diet may surpass that of the individuals who eat meat. The most clear explanation behind this is the potential that meat conveys for sullying. 60% of general store chickens are tainted with salmonella, and in 1997 alone 25 million pounds of burger were sullied with the E. Coli infection (Metallic). Generally, in any case, veggie lover consumes less calories are embraced for substantially more positive reasons.Studies have demonstrated that the sans meat way of life is gainful for lessening the danger of ceaseless illnesses, for example, coronary supply route ailment, diabetes, and a few types of disease (Corrals). Particularly huge in the present society because of the developing issue, is the eating routine's potential for bringing down the hazard for corpulence. As indicated by the U. S. Government, 23% of Americans were stout as of the year 2000 (ââ¬Å"Overweight Prevalenceâ⬠). Plant-based eating regimens have additionally been appeared to help in diabetics' kidney and nerve functions. In option, they might be a factor in the more drawn out life expectancies obvious in industrialized countries and, as indicated by the International Congress on Vegetarian Nutrition at Loam Linda University, can ââ¬Å"slow, and maybe even converse, age-related decreases in cerebrum work and in subjective and engine performanceâ⬠(Corrals). Then again, a huge report has discovered that slims down high in creature protein and ailing in Lana nourishments really expanded the hazard for coronary illness and malignant growth (ââ¬Å"Meat-Freeâ⬠). Dry. Caldwell Uselessly Jar. F the Cleveland Clinic attests that our common American eating routine, portrayed by its accentuation on creature items, is the reason for 75% of the sicknesses in our nation (Hurley 39). There have likewise been a few discoveries around there exceptionally compelling to ladies. Studies have demonstrated that soy nourishments, the most and decrease the hot flashes she encounters during menopause (ââ¬Å"Meat-Freeâ⬠). Moreover, an investigation as of late distributed in Contemporary BOB/GUN keeps up that a low-at veggie lover diet can help in the alleviation o f side effects of premenstrual disorder, for example, ââ¬Å"pain force, social issues and water retentionâ⬠(Correct).Cardiovascular illness, which murders a greater number of ladies than some other malady, can likewise be influenced by a vegan diet, as the eating regimen ââ¬Å"leads to striking reductionsâ⬠in cholesterol (Shadow's). The basic fantasy that vegan counts calories are healthfully deficient is to a great extent false. Indeed, even the American Dietetic Association embraces vegetarianism: ââ¬Å"A all around arranged veggie lover eating style can be refreshing, healthfully stable, and advantageous for the anticipation of specific maladies. One of the predominant confusions is that the eating routine doesn't take into account all the essential protein. The truth, in any case, is actually the inverse; a few vegetables â⬠and soy items specifically â⬠give the entirety of the protein that the body needs (ââ¬Å"Meat-Freeâ⬠). Interestingly, the normal omnivore really devours a measure of protein that extraordinarily surpasses what is solid (Hurley 40). Another worry is the absence of calcium in the eating regimen, yet this additionally demonstrates unwarranted. Truth be told, research has demonstrated that while most American teenagers get a long way from enough calcium, veggie lover youngsters who remember eggs and milk for their eating regimen really devour a more than satisfactory measure of the supplement (Corrals).Perhaps the most significant contention for vegetarianism is the act of creating and eating meat. The way toward giving life for the sole reason for removing it is amazingly flawed from a moral perspective. Creator Michael Pollen composed, ââ¬Å"More than some other organization, the American mechanical animal homestead offers a nightmarish look at what free enterprise can resemble without good or administrative limitation. â⬠This is especially evident on account of Cafes, Confined Animal Feeding Operations, now and again likewise called plant farms.Conditions on these ranches are horrible to the point that Pollen composes, ââ¬Å"To visit a cutting edge CAFEâ⬠¦ Is to enter a world that, for all its mechanical advancement, is as yet planned by Cartesian standards: animals are machines unequipped for feeling torment. Since no reasoning individual can accept this any progressively, modern creature farming relies upon an acceptance of difficult ideas skepticism with respect to the individuals who work it and a readiness to turn away your eyes with respect to every other person. Male chickens conceived on a CAFE will be tossed into waste packs and left beyond words they are of no incentive to a rancher Motivational). The legitimacy of the above proclamation is demonstrated valid by the friend looked into diary article entitled Adolescent (In)vulnerability by Marilyn Jacobs Quadrel, Baruch Fischhoff, and Wendy Davis. The article uncovers the aftereffects of three gatherings that were addressed on their view of how likely they may encounter various dangers. The subjects incorporated a scope of people from various financial status, for example, working class grown-ups with their young youngsters and high-chance youths getting treatment for various analysis. A portion of the dangers included car crashes, undesirable pregnancies, liquor addiction, being a survivor of a robbing, and getting wiped out from different components, for example, air contamination or toxic substance. The outcomes show that the entirety of the subjects feel that they would co nfront less hazard in contrast with others. See increasingly: Basic Economic issue of Scarcity Essay The assessment of relative safety was about the equivalent for the young people and the grown-ups. Boththe youngsters and their folks concur that the guardians are less powerless against explicit dangers. The investigation uncovers that there is a slight contrast in the manner young people and grown-ups think when they are confronted with settling on a choice. One gigantic issue is that young people might be seen as clumsy to settle on a choice which could prompt their privileges being renounced and wrongly diagnosing the genuine establishment of their hazard practices. The examination suggests that one clarification for why young people face extraordinary challenges is on the grounds that they think little of the probability that an adverse result will happen to them. In spite of the fact that young people have mindfulness that dangers are included, they likewise have false impressions of dangers related with specific practices that differ because of the teenagers financial status. Generally, the examination shows that there isn't sufficient help to demonstrate that apparent insusceptibility is to a great extent present during puberty, yet proof is available to finish up grown-ups consistently show resistance. While assessing ones hazard, the mental procedure for all ages are comparative and one-sided which prompts the aftereffect of ones conviction as less helpless in contrast with another person. Defects show up in each examination on account of various factors, for example, the members or their condition. One defect of this investigation might be the part of time pressures made by the subjects that may vary in a genuine circumstance. A second defect of the examination is pressure from peers isn't represented and is neglectful of social support. This blemish is urgent in light of the fact that friend pressure is an immense piece of teenagers taking part in more dangerous conduct. Proof is uncovered that youngsters are bound to draw in or participate in more h azardous practices without predicting the results when in a gathering or encompassed by associates. A subsequent report to this one that would endeavor to annihilate a significant imperfection is study both the young people and grown-ups when in a gathering or a friend setting. The outcomes may be diverse because of companion pressure and the craving to be famous or fit in. Two conversation addresses that provoked from the perusing of the diary article are: 1. Should the lawful savoring age the U.S. be brought down to 18? Are multi year olds ready to buy and devour liquor mindfully? 2. Should conception prevention be accessible to young people without parental assent? Would access to contraception forestall or bring down the pace of undesirable teenager pregnancies? I accept that this investigation presents numerous significant parts of the similitudes and contrasts among young people and grown-ups with regards to settling on a choice and being seen as defenseless against a hazard. I concur that people have a misjudged attention to ones defenselessness to dangers in contrast with c ompanions, relatives and outsiders. In light of individual experience, I trust I was increasingly disposed to be incautious and nonsensical as a pre-adult contrasted with my present age. timothybowman148http://www.blogger.com/profile/02088043711162411869noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4885301002506464511.post-78704657890197388242020-08-09T22:54:00.001-07:002020-08-09T22:54:05.342-07:004 Challenges Every Growing SaaS Business Will Face - Focus4 Challenges Every Growing SaaS Business Will Face - Focus Itâs been eleven years since Till and I founded MeisterLabs and since launching, weâve come up against our fair share of hurdles. Fortunately, weâve weathered each storm and at every plateau discovered new ways to breathe life into the business and our approach to it. The common denominator at each of these crossroads was our choice to invest in growth. I doubt that weâre unique in that sense. In my experience, every new business faces comparable challenges, the solutions to which are, in one way or another, to always continue growing. Over the past decade, Iâve witnessed the development of multiple versions of myself as an entrepreneur, as well as our company, MeisterLabs, where we developed our first SaaS product, MindMeister. So I want to share these moments of evolution and how we weathered them. Maybe our experiences my experiences will help future SaaS entrepreneurs navigate these same transitions more smoothly. Evolution 1: You wonât always be flavor of the month One of the best things about launching a new startup is the free media attention you get. My co-founder and I got the most recognition by far when we first launched â" innovation awards, people talking about us, etc. We assumed this is how it would always be. The first version of MindMeister released 2007 on private beta. Eventually, though, everyone whoâs going to write about you has already written about you. The press attention slows down and youâre no longer the hot young company of the year. This can be jarring for founders, but itâs not all bad news. The upshot is, once youâre no longer the flavor of the week, it forces you to really start to invest in creativity and attention-grabbing work. Youâve now got a moment to lean in and commit to growth. Itâs best if you learn early on that when your hotshot supernova phase begins to fade, growth is a remedy for many of the challenges youâll face. Evolution 2: Your staff wonât always be a bunch of single 20-somethings There was a time when pretty much everyone at our company was between 22 and 28. Most people were single (if not, well, there werenât kids around) and we spent our free time together hanging out at pub quizzes and over the weekend. This type of setup has been part of startup mythology since The Social Network â" a work hard, play hard group of young people creating the next big thing. It can be a fun and productive way to work, but even if your team starts out fitting this startup stereotype, it wonât always be that way. Team members get married and family inevitably takes center stage in their lives. Before you know it, 6 PM Friday drinks in the kitchen become booking happy hour into your calendar three weeks in advance. You might sometimes miss the early days, but this evolution is both inevitable and good. Your team members are growing and, hopefully, your company is growing with them. Itâs still possible to preserve some of that youthful energy and excitement, however. Ensure that thereâs always an influx of new blood by hiring some firecrackers who will re-infuse the company with a fresh dose of excitement and impatience provided it also seems like theyll be good at their job. For the veteran team members that do stick with you, ten years in a company can create moments where motivation is flat and inertia takes over. Work through these flat periods by giving employees the freedom to build their skills in new parts of the company while developing professionally. These senior team members that know your tools inside and out can be priceless, so youâll need to work out ways to keep them engaged and on board. Evolution 3: The coast can kill you Sometimes when an entrepreneur has a booming startup, they think theyâll be able to coast, to pull back on effort, take a bit more revenue out of the company, or even buy a vacation home in the Caribbean, if theyâve been particularly successful. For instance, I was traveling a few months back and talking with other entrepreneurs. One guy had been with a company for seven years. It was so successful that the founder was now nowhere to be seen â" always jetting off to a new destination. We went in the complete opposite direction. Our original product was successful and growing and we felt as though we had pushed the creativity as far as possible. Instead of bailing, we doubled down and launched another product, MeisterTask. This second product breathed new life into us as founders, as well as the company as a whole. Developing a new product also inspired us to think about new avenues for our first product, MindMeister. Our second product: task management solution, MeisterTask Here again, even though we had one successful product, growth was the secret sauce that kept MeisterLabs fresh and moving forward. By developing a new project, we not only managed to stay sharp, but we also like to think it kept our top talent engaged. Evolution 4: Competition exists (and it may speed by you) There are now over 1.5 million tech startups in Europe alone. This inevitably means some entrepreneurs are going to have genius ideas and move at warp speed â" faster, sometimes, than you. I know some young guys that launched a startup right out of university. Of course, doing this doesnât always take you where you hope it will, but these guys got it right, and at the right time. The company is growing rapidly and the founder is loving life in the limelight. They went soaring past us in terms of users and revenue a while ago and although the tool isnât a competitor of ours, once upon a time that would have bothered me. When we first started, Iâd see competitorsâ sites and start running nightmare scenarios: âThese guys have thought of everything we missed! Whatâs going to happen to our market share?â This can be depressing if you allow it to be. But these days, Iâm used to competition. Itâs a valuable skill to cultivate. And as we say in German â" at the end of the day, we all cook with water. The healthiest way to see competition is as an inspiration to improve your own tool. If the common theme running through these four key stages of our companyâs evolution isnât yet obvious, let me say it plainly â" growth is the solution to many of the obstacles standing in the way of building a successful SaaS company. Startups are like sharks: if they stop moving, they die. Thatâs why, even after nearly twelve years, my co-founder Till and I have plans in our books and tricks up our sleeves to continue growing our business and providing new ways for teams to improve their productivity. The topic of love and desire is a mysterious and marvelous thing. Shakespeare uses the characters in his play to portray the mystical prowls of love and desire. His play A Midsumer Nightââ¬â¢s Dream and As You Like It depicts how love can influence a person but more specifically how it influences the action of women and how those actions determines the course of the play. I believe that through these plays Shakespeare have portrayed women as being just as empowered as men in pursuit of their desires, however, their actions arenââ¬â¢t as extreme as the menââ¬â¢s. Also I believe that he portrays them as being in more control of their feelings as they are true to their feelings. Shakespeare does an excellent job depicting women in a way that was unusual for that era. In A Midsummer Nightââ¬â¢s Dream the two female lovers were portrayed as the object of desire. Both men desired Hermia at first but then their desire shifted to Helena after the use of the magic love potion. Titania was also put under the influence of the love potion causing her to desire the ass-headed Bottom. Shakespeare uses the love potion to show how easily love can be influenced. We see that both Helena and Titania experience a one-sided love, which causes them to try and woo the ones that they love. Hermia is also influenced by love to pursue her desire to marry the one she loves, Lysander, and not who her father wants her to marry, Demetrius. A good play or any piece of literature is nothing without their settings, be them based in reality or fantasy. A good writer not only uses setting to give their audience and idea of where the story is taking place as important means of moving the plot forward or to add an artistic themes that couldnââ¬â¢t be expressed in other ways. A story would be dreadfully boring if nothing ever happened to the characters, and the setting provides the context in which the given story takes place. Setting includes things such as time, place, and the given social environment. Shakespeare in particular had a knack for setting, and seamlessly blended elements of the time period in which he lived within the plays he wrote. A Midsummer Nightââ¬â¢s Dream and As you like it are two plays in which their settings are especially important to plot and theme and both have pairs of settings that form interesting dichotomies, with themes of Hierarchy/Patriarchy and disorder in the former and the positive /negative light of the two settings of the latter. It is through these dichotomies that Shakespeare is able to include elements of his time and not only provide common ground for his audience, but uses these settings to move the plot and provide important themes for the audience to take to heart. Beginning with A Midsummer Nightââ¬â¢s Dream, the primary settings Shakespeare used for this play was the city of Athens and the forest near Athens. If the temperature remains constant therefore the resistance is found to remain constant. Stefan-Boltzmann law states that when the temperature if above an average of 1000K, then the relationship of voltage and current should be found to be consistent with the formula AT4. We will write a custom essay sample on Physics of a Light Bulb or any similar topic only for you Order Now The experimental data found in this, Physics of a Light Bulb, experiment both correlates and verifies the Stefan-Boltzmann law. The voltage and current were found to be proportional to one another, verifying Ohmââ¬â¢s law. In addition, the fact that radiation away from the light bulb is indeed proportional to the fourth power of temperature was observed and again verified through a linear fit graph. The percent error found between the two experimental B values was found to be an average 6%. This showing proving that the experiment was decently accurate. Objective: To measure the relation between voltage and current in a small flashlight bulb; to determine the temperature of the filament; to verify the Stefan-Boltzmann law of radiation. Procedure: Begin the experiment by correctly setting up the circuit. Using the DMM set, find the resistance of the cold filament of the bulb at room temperature. Open a pre-set experiment file, than connect the circuit to the bulb. Slowly increase the output signal from the power supply, as the voltage reaches 10V, immediately bring the power supply back down to zero. There should be an observed recorded data and graph in the experimental file. From the recording, highlight the resistance of the cold filament from the data which corresponds to the current ? 0. 08A. Apply a linear fit which in return will give the slope, which represents the bulb resistance. Copy and paste the recorded data into Graphical Analysis, insert various calculated columns, in order to find the temperature of the hot filament and to test the relationship versus power and temperature. Repeat for a second set of data. Use the graphs to conclude if the Stefan-Boltzmann law is obeyed. Experimental Data: See attached graphs. Results: Resistance of Cold Filament| Experimental Bulb Resistance| % Difference| B1 from Graph1(W/K)| B2 from Graph2(W/K)| % Difference| Theoretical B (W/K)| % Error of B1| % Error of B2| 2. 5? | 2. 46? | 1. 61%| 4. 26| 3. 76| 12. 5%| 4| 6. 19%| 6. 33%| Data Analysis: Discussion: The objective of the lab, Physics of a Light Bulb, was to measure the relationship between voltage and current in a small light bulb, be able to determine the temperature of the filament. nd to verify the Stefan-Boltzmann law of radiation. After completing the lab, the relationship between both the voltage and current was found to be linear, as long as the current is below or at 0. 08 A. This correlation proves Ohmââ¬â¢s law therefore current through a metal conductor is proportional to the applied voltage. Through measurement and observations of the printed graphs, the temperature of the filament of the light bulb was found to be around the value of 1300K. Using the data supplied from the new calculated columns, the verification of the Stefan-Boltzmann law of radiation was proved to hold true. The law states that when the temperature is above an average value of 1000K, then the relationship between voltage and current is consistent with the formula AT4. When analyzing the curve fit of the power versus temperature graph, it is indeed observed that the experimental value given corresponds with the theoretical function that the power radiated away from the light bulb is surely proportional to the fourth power of temperature. The percent error observed for both experimental B values, when compared to the theoretical value of 4, shows to be an average of 6%, not a large value of error present. Therefore, the overall system present in the experiment proved to be both precise and accurate. Considering the percent difference between the two experimental resistors was found to be a mere 1. 61%. The percent difference between the two experimental B values was that of a higher value, 12. 5%. This may indeed have been caused by the fact that the sectioning of data for the second B value was less accurate than that of the first B value. Conclusion: At the conclusion of the experiment, Physics of a Light Bulb, the objective was surely met. The goal was to distinguish the relationship between voltage and current, as well as finding the temperature of the filament, and also to verify the Stefan-Boltzmann law of radiation. Through experimental values, it was observed that the relationship of voltage and current is found to be linear when the current is at or below 0. 8A. The temperature of the filament was also observed to be an average of about 1300K and greater. By taking the values of the Power versus Temperature graph, and creating a new Power versus Temperature raised to the fourth graph and thus applying a linear fit, the relationship of voltage and current was found to be consistent with AT4 and verifying Stefan-Boltzmann law of radiation. Current is indeed proportional to the applied voltage. A number of things make this poem as effective as it is but a large portion of that magic captured in the poem comes from effective word choice and skilful structure.à The word choice within this poem is very skilful and is beautifully matched to the theme (A mothers week) of the poem. George Mackay Brown relies heavily on his choice of words within the poem to create an affectionate account of his mother. In verse 3 he wrote:à All her tasks were like bluebells in a jar on the windowsill. Although being quite a strange simile the word choice is well chosen to give connotations the mother doing her jobs military like but with enjoyment. (The image of bluebells standing to attention reminds me of a soldier which reminds me of the military.) The effect of using bluebells creates an image of soothing things like waterfalls and flowers. But when mixed with the idea of her doing her tasks seems to create a mixed idea of her both wanting and needing to complete her tasks. Another theory about the choice of words is that the bluebells symbolise her children as they were almost certainly collected by them. She does her jobs for her children to please them and as a thank you they bring her flowers. Like so many other imaginative uses of words in this poem there could be many theorys about there true meaning. This mystery helps keep the poem interesting and makes the mother seem more mysterious as well. Although the word choice is important in every poem there would be nothing captivating about them if they werent integrated into a number of compelling similes, metaphors and other figures of speech. A lot of the figures of speech contained with this poem are unique to this particular poem and would be out of context in almost all other eventualities. One metaphor that I feel is used in the perfect place is:à The Garden a Galleon in the gale. This metaphor also interlinks alliteration which increases its unique feel. The actual metaphor is used to describe the effect of the wind on the garden and in a verse that is based on washing fits in perfectly with the idea of drying clothes. The image can be pictured with the grass rippling like the sea and the sheets catching the wind like the majestic sails of the ship. Along with the fact the poem is set in Orkney, a strongly established fishing island makes the metaphor of a ship even more fitting. Another use of images created in this poem is a very interesting example of alliteration;à a slave among the storm grey shirts and sheetsà This is a very captivating example as it combines the facts about the actual writing with a hyperbole of slave and the seaside connotations of storm grey although this example of alliteration may have a lot of meanings the one that seems to strike me every time is that the words fit and its relevant but most of all it sounds good,à a slave among the storm grey sheetsà Just seems to roll so effortlessly off your tongue. I love examples like this that just seem to fit perfectly and as this poem contained a lot of these examples, really appealed to me. The structure of this poem is something I particularly enjoyed, although some people may not notice it this poem describes the mothers week in seven stanzas. Each of these representing a day in her week. I feel this reminds you of how every day is different and is special. I particularly like this effect as it describes each day like a very short story. Another thing that caught my eye in this poem was the use of enjambment to create a cliff-hanger effect. An example of this is:à she rose above textures of oat and barley into the paradise of cakesà I feel this pause is very well placed and the wait to read the next line is like waiting for cakes to rise and is very well crafted to give this effect. .ua07a113a48e4a476f2f5a8be93b7fa69 , .ua07a113a48e4a476f2f5a8be93b7fa69 .postImageUrl , .ua07a113a48e4a476f2f5a8be93b7fa69 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ua07a113a48e4a476f2f5a8be93b7fa69 , .ua07a113a48e4a476f2f5a8be93b7fa69:hover , .ua07a113a48e4a476f2f5a8be93b7fa69:visited , .ua07a113a48e4a476f2f5a8be93b7fa69:active { border:0!important; } .ua07a113a48e4a476f2f5a8be93b7fa69 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ua07a113a48e4a476f2f5a8be93b7fa69 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ua07a113a48e4a476f2f5a8be93b7fa69:active , .ua07a113a48e4a476f2f5a8be93b7fa69:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ua07a113a48e4a476f2f5a8be93b7fa69 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ua07a113a48e4a476f2f5a8be93b7fa69 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ua07a113a48e4a476f2f5a8be93b7fa69 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ua07a113a48e4a476f2f5a8be93b7fa69 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ua07a113a48e4a476f2f5a8be93b7fa69:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ua07a113a48e4a476f2f5a8be93b7fa69 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ua07a113a48e4a476f2f5a8be93b7fa69 .ua07a113a48e4a476f2f5a8be93b7fa69-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ua07a113a48e4a476f2f5a8be93b7fa69:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Poetry Persuasive EssayThe content and theme of this poem are much the same. The description and depiction of a typical week for this mother. The poem at all times focuses on the mother even though sometimes shes described in unusual waysà she rose above textures of oat and barleyà Although describing baking is also a very loving statement, in which she is this graceful angel (rising) through the clouds. (of oat and barley) The atmosphere at all times within this poem is one of thanks for all the hard work the mother puts in and is noticeable when you read the poem. Even though George Mackay Brown wrote this poem for his own mother about her the poem could be classed as universally applicable to all mother as this poem doesnt just describe his mothers tasks. It also creates a template for the ideal mother, the image is created by combining the stereotypes of a good mother with the emotional being of a living human. This creates a person that everyone wants in their life and that is a very difficult thing to achieve from a poem but George Mackay Brown manages to capture the magic which makes this poem such a joy to read. The magic in the way the poem can be applied to all mothers and their loving and caring attitude towards their children. timothybowman148http://www.blogger.com/profile/02088043711162411869noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4885301002506464511.post-26049485127317347902020-03-23T06:18:00.001-07:002020-03-23T06:18:02.646-07:00Teacher Assistant free essay sample Then following with an introduction of the subject and and activity for the whole class, then asking questions and develop the topic, maybe in small groups, for a longer period of time. Architecture is to building as literature is to the printed word. According to Vitruvius, a 1sts of such works of art are the Pyramids of Giza, the Lions gate at Mycenae, the Parthenon, the Colosseum, the Hagia Sophia, and the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Each of these buildings tells the story of the culture that produced it, and by studying the development of architecture; one can see the development of religions, ideas, and beliefs. The three pyramids at Giza in Egypt, Cheops, Khafre, and Menkaure, are among the most famous pieces of architecture in the world and they are also the first buildings with innovative architecture. Each Egyptian ruler was obsessed with constructing a tomb for himself more impressive and longer lasting than that of his predecessors. Before the 4th Dynasty (begins c. 2680 BC) Egyptian royal burial took the form of the mastaba, an archetypal rectangular mass of masonry. This evolved into the stepped pyramid and finally into the fully refined pyramid. The development of the pyramid reached its climax during the Fourth Dynasty in the famous triad of great pyramids at Giza... timothybowman148http://www.blogger.com/profile/02088043711162411869noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4885301002506464511.post-74391962468617008172020-02-18T17:45:00.001-08:002020-02-18T17:45:02.163-08:00No topic Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 48No topic - Essay Example The steps taken by Hitler that started the World War II were attempts to the terms created by the treaty of Versailles. The treaty of Versailles weakened Germany by creating economic problems, reducing Germanys trade with other nations and causing unemployment and Germany. The treaty of Versailles took German territory after which it imposed an unpopular government on Germany. Hitler was fighting to change all these problems caused by the treaty of Versailles when he took the actions that led to the World War II. Hitler wanted to remove the democratic government and make Germany powerful both economically and militarily. Hitler also wanted to make Germany powerful geographically and unite the Germans. Most Germans wanted to reverse the effects of the World War I treaty. Therefore, Hitler gained much support from the German people. The desire to remove the Treaty of Versailles and restore Germany led to the rise of Hitler and fascism in Germany. If the delegates who created the treaty of Versailles wanted peace in Europe, they would have been more concerned with the future of Europe rather than punishing Germany. It includes adults of both sexes, at least two of whom maintain a socially approved relationship, and one or more children, own or adopted, of the sexually cohabiting adults. The U.S. Bureau of the Census has defined a family as two or more persons related by birth, marriage, or adoption, who reside together. Thus a family can be two or more adult siblings living together, a parent and child or children, two adults who are related by marriage but have no children, or adults who adopt a child.â⬠A family is a set of human being related to each other in a non- professional manner, giving rise to a concrete cohesion within the family. Love, care, and affection are the most prominent human values, which are responsible for maintaining these bonds of relationships within a family. (Agarwal, V, 2005), not only these bu t a family also gives strength to an individual and because of its strength an individual can overcome from different kinds of problems too. A family gives strength to an individual; it is not only the strongest point but also the weakest point of an individual. A person learns different things from his/her family, but learning different things also varies from family to family. There are two basic kinds of family in our society Joint Family and Nuclear Family. A Joint Family (or extended family) is also known as a complex family, parents and their childrens families often live under a single roof, which means that Joint family consist of two or multiple generations. In some cases Joint family can be said as a family where a collection of more then one nuclear families are interconnected either by blood relation or marital relation reside under the same roof. All the members, regardless of which particular nuclear family (within that joint family) they belong to, live together and share happiness, grief, and virtually every kind of problem and joy together. The joint family in itself simulates a typical view of our multi-cultural, multi-lingual society in India and as well as in Bangladesh. (Agarwal, V.2005) Joint Families are mostly found in Asia. The term nuclear family developed in the western world to distinguish the family group and is considered as the simplest type of a family which consist of a married man and a woman with their offspring ââ¬Ë.Nuclear Family can also be referred to as a conjugal family because of the accent is of the husband wife relationship and the nuclear family is the basic unit of all more complex formsââ¬â¢. (Nimkoff, F.M. Middleton, R. 1960) Family in the Western country like the United States have become more diverse with no particular household arrangement representing half of the United States population. The different types of families occur in a wide variety of settings, and their specific functions and meanings depend largely on their relationship to other social institutions. Non-scholars, especially in the United States and Europe, use the term nuclear family to refer to conjugal families. Non-scholars, especially in the United States and Europe, also use the term . Extended Familyââ¬â¢ this term has two distinct meanings. First, it serves as a synonym of consanguine family .Second, in societies dominated by the conjugal family, it refers to kindredââ¬â¢ (Retrieved April 7, 2007) The behavior, lifestyle, thinking everything varies from family to family .i.e. a person from a joint family behaves, thinks in a different way then that of a nuclear family. People from joint family comes a cross many different things and by facing those different things they mostly learn how to meet the social challenges of the real world. Living in a joint family in itself is a beautiful experience and among the two basic kinds of family, joint family is the one where a person gets different kinds of advantages such as a person learns to love and earn respect which is the key to have harmonious and never ending relationship. Mutual respect and love are biggest values a joint family can offer. Not only a person to learns love and earn respect but also an individual can share his/her joys and grieves; in joint family there are many people to enjoy about a particular delightful occasion and as well as provide support at the time of family problems. (i.e., incase if some one is ill). When a person lives in a joint family he/she can share many secrets with someone of his/her age (cousins), which he/ she cannot share with his/her elders or younger but cannot do the same when in a nuclear family. Another advantage of living in a joint family is of safety and development of children, in joint families a child can be nurtured p roperly and perfectly. The chances of a child to get spoilt are lesser than that of a nuclear family. For example, in many cases we have seen that the working women leave their child at home along with their servant or baby sitter and their company spoil the child, whereas in joint family the cases are reverse; there are enough people (such as grandmother, aunts etc) to look after the child. Despite of all these advantages the concept of joint family is disappearing day by day from our society; and the reason behind it is the mentality of people are changing, they donââ¬â¢t want to be dependent on anyone and donââ¬â¢t want anyone to object them as in some cases it has been seen that the elders are objecting the younger for not doing any specific thing. One of the disadvantages of living in a joint family is the unequal distribution of shares in home- economy. For example many families we have seen that there is a single point of income, such as a common shop, a single earning hand, or some revenue periodically generated from fixed assets like rents and royalties. In such cases, the eldest member (or the earner) is usually the one, who takes after the economic power and responsibility to manage home funds, divide the share of each nuclear family (within the joint family) rationally. Most of the times, his inability in doing so, becomes the reason for family-partitions. This is inability however arise due to various factor including dishonesty of himself (or his own nuclear family) or some other family member inappropriate distribution of responsibilities and rights for each nuclear family, for expenditure. Share of each nuclear family within the joint family must be decided setting up the balance among the needs (education, clothing , and special preferences), number of dependents, contribution to funds, and the special eventual expenditures. This balance is really pivoted on a very sensitive fulcrum, which should be the result of a healthy exchange of honest thoughts of each responsible person in the joint family. Each individualââ¬â¢s equal recognition is very important and also very important for not allowing any inferiority or superiority complex to creep into anyoneââ¬â¢s mind. This particularly must be avoided at the level where, parents start expecting their child to be as bright as children of other couple in the same joint family, for instance. This sometimes, gives rise to silent bitter feelings and these feelings may end up causing differences. Differences in opinion create a barrier among the family members and this is one of the important things which should be taken care of, by all the responsible members of the joint family in a matured fashion. The healthy brainstorming over the issue in question may give rise to an even healthier environment of living. The other way to conquering this problem is having a heated altercation, which makes conditions bad to worse, ultimately resulting in separations. ââ¬Å"(Agarwal, V. 2005) So these are the most common problems which are the reasons behind partition or separation or for avoiding for living in a joint family, but on the other hand, by doing so a person is getting away from his/her loved ones and accepting different kind of risk by living in a nuclear family and are also forgetting their responsibilities towards their loved ones and towards their whole family. Living in a joint family can lesser pressure financially or can be advantageous for an individual as the members contribute according to their income but it can also create problems among the family members for not contributing equally or due to less amount of money. People prefer to live in joint families but because of their misunderstanding (i.e. differences in opinion,) among the family members an individual might avoid to live in it. But by taking its advantages into consideration, people do like living in joint families too. Living in a joint family is financially advantageous for all the members of the family. As by living together the members contribute according to their capability and in this way they lesser pressure from each other. People in our society face a lot of problems; financial ones, social ones, family ones. One of the biggest problems is the decline of the family. In advantageous thoughts of nuclear family, two parents mean double the chances of a good income, over a single parent. It means twice the chance that a parent is home to teach the kids, be a good role model. It means less stress for both the adult and the kids. It means more diverse influences. A child needs a mothers perspective and a fathers perspective, not just once, its not as balanced. Through most of our history and most civilizations, we have had extended families. Mom and dad lived with, or near, grandmother and grandfather, aunts and uncles, cousins; it was like having a gigantic family instead of a nuclear one. No strangers raising the kids, no worry of bankruptcy if someone loses a job, always someone there when you need them. The nuclear, isolated or restricted family is not a recent phenomenon, but has existed in many cultures throughout human history. Indeed, the extended family of several generations is found mostly in relatively advanced, stable, and affluent, but not yet industrialized societies. Very primitive and very sophisticated societies seem to prefer the nuclear family model. However, nuclear families can vary in the degree of their isolation and restrictedness. For example, before the Industrial Revolution the Western nuclear family was often embedded in a larger social unit, such as a farm or estate, an aristocratic court, or a village populated by relatives. Many older city neighborhoods also kept kinship ties strong, and thus even very small families remained open to the community. Family visits might be frequent and extended; children might freely circulate and feel at home in several households. On the other hand, we have seen that, beginning in the late 17th century; a trend toward closeness reduced the size of many larger households and changed the relationships between the remaining family members. They became more concerned about each other. They needed each other more. The idyllic home of the bourgeois became an island of serenity in the gathering storm of modernization, a haven secure from the world out there, from aggressiveness, competition, and class warfare. We have also seen how this home sheltered women and protected the children from sexual and other temptations. Other nasty social realities were also kept safely at bay. The family income was no longer earned inside, but rather outside the house. The division of labor between the sexes became more pronounced as men spent more and more time away from their families as wage earners in factories, shops, and offices. Their wives became almost the only companions of their small children whose care and education was n ow their main responsibility. (Formerly, these tasks had been divided between mothers, grandmothers, nurses, and servants.) Virtually the only middle-class men who still worked at home were doctors and lawyers in private practice. As a rule, however, the bourgeois family saw its head and breadwinner only when he returned from his work at night. This work itself remained an abstraction to both his wife and his children. In a typical nuclear family, there are two parents, and either one or both have jobs. So if someone loses their job, either the family has no income, or only half of what it had. But imagine a family with three or more parents, some of whom work. A lost job is less of a disaster to the family then. One of the biggest problems families face today is that nobody can stay home to care for the kids. It is a statistical fact that the second parent usually has to go out and work just to bring home about the same amount of money that the first parent is paying in taxes. This hurts the children, who end up being raised by random babysitters and day-care centers. But in an extended family, its much easier to be sure that someones always around to care for the kids, provide a good role model. Perhaps two adults work and one stays home, or each works at different times. In a nuclear family there will be less scope for children to get advice and encouragement from the experienced elders. There will be problems in bringing up the children and absence of care and affection of the elders to the children. It is another question whether the nuclear family itself, even when complete, is still the best available option. Many people today are convinced that small, single households are uneconomical and wasteful, that they are still emotionally unhealthy, that they perpetuate outmoded stereotypical sex roles, and that they produce competitive, egotistical children in an age when universal cooperation seems the only hope of mankind. It is also argued that the modern family no longer has any other function than to provide love and intimacy, and that this is by no means enough to justify its existence. Indeed, since families have been largely relieved of their economic, educational, and protective functions by the state, sexual attachment has become the nearly e xclusive basis of marriage, and this basis is notoriously weak. Frequent divorce and remarriage, however, while perhaps practical for the adults, hardly seem in the best interest of the children. Under the circumstances, it is only fitting that a number of thoughtful men and women should continue to search for more stable, new and improved family models. Living in a joint family not only is advantageous but also has disadvantages as well, but in order to achieve something one has to lose something too. The same is the case for joint families, by thinking about the advantages that a joint family provides one might to give up the idea of living in a nuclear family and unite with their loved ones. Living in a joint family is advantageous. In order to live happily and peacefully in a joint family an individual should not lose his temper and should overlook each others mistakes and also should understand each other. The family members should have good communication among themselves in order to ensure free flow of money around the family. timothybowman148http://www.blogger.com/profile/02088043711162411869noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4885301002506464511.post-19161052299147968842020-01-18T16:00:00.001-08:002020-01-18T16:00:04.810-08:00Girl Number 20The 19th century witnessed the beginning of queen Victoriaââ¬â¢s reign, the industrial revolution, realism as literary movement and realistic novels among other. When we refer to realistic novels, we are not talking about novels being a ââ¬Å"realityâ⬠but instead we refer to the creation of fictional stories and characters that are very much like real life people and situations. In other words, authors wrote their novels to critize social unfairness, poverty, struggles, health issues and so forth, as a way to reflect the ââ¬Å"truthâ⬠just as it was, and it all was possible because their stories and characters were believable.Charles Dickens was one of the most influential writers of the time, his novel ââ¬Å"Hard Timesâ⬠, as the rest of his works, is vivid examples of what realistic novels would be like. He portrays his judgement towards society in a very comprehensible and even entertaining way, providing the reader an idea of the time and era he was living in . Furthermore, he lets readers identify with the situation and characters of the story, reflecting through the narrator his social perspectives of the time.Regarding the novel Hard Times, there are several issues and characters we could point out, such as progress, social limitations, poverty, development, educational patterns of the time, Mr. Bounderby, Mr. Gradgrind, Louisa, Tom, Cecilia Jupe (Sissy), Mr. Harthouse, Stephen Blackpool among others. However, the one we identified the most with, was ââ¬Å"Girl Number 20â⬠or Cecilia Jupe (Sissy). Through out the whole story, Dickens shows her as an innocent, unprotected an abandoned child, but at the same time she becomes one of the most important and influential characters of the story. In addition, the author redefines, in a way, the role women had at the time, by giving Sissy the power to be herself and the power to do whatever she thought was right. In order to present Cecilia Jupe as the heroine of the story, we will have t o consider her background, being it, the cornerstone of the principles she will use for the rest of her life. Having mentioned this, we will begin by referring to the way Dickens gave form to Sissyââ¬â¢s childhood. A motherless child, who was raised by her loving and strange father. Even though her ather was a sad and a depressed man, Sissy discovered how to please him by being more than a daughter, a caring friend; the author showed it in this quote: And you were his comfort through everything? ââ¬â¢She nodded, with the tears rolling down her face. ââ¬ËI hope so, and father said I was. It was because he grew so scared and trembling, and because he felt himself to be a poor, weak, ignorant, helpless man (those used to be his words), that he wanted me so much to know a great deal and be different from him. I used to read to him to cheer his courage, and he was very fond of that. p. 51) This is one of the reasons for us to give Sissy the heroical part in the story, though she made simple gestures, she made her father happy no matter what situation he was going through. It is easy to understand Sissyââ¬â¢s fairytale life, due to all the elements that surrounded her during her childhood: Her mother a dancer, her father a clown, her readings, most of them fantastic, but nourishing at the same time for both of them, here is one of the moments where she expressed her testimony: ââ¬Å"Your mother? ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËFather says she was quite a scholar. She died when I was born. She was;ââ¬â¢ Sissy made the terrible communication nervously; ââ¬Ëshe was a dancerâ⬠¦ â⬠Fatherââ¬â¢s a;ââ¬â¢ Sissy whispered the awful word; ââ¬Ëa clown. ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËTo make the people laugh? ââ¬â¢ said Louisa, with a nod of intelligence. ââ¬ËYes. But they wouldnââ¬â¢t laugh sometimes, and then father criedâ⬠â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ I used to read to him to cheer his courage, and he was very fond of that. They were wrong books- I am never to speak of th em here- but we didnââ¬â¢t know there was any harm in them. ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËAnd he liked them? ââ¬â¢ said Louisa, with her searching gaze on Sissy all this time. ââ¬ËO very much! They kept him, many times, from what did him real harm. And often and often of a night, he used to forget all his troubles in wondering whether the Sultan would let the lady go on with the story, or would have her head cut off before it was finished. â⬠(Pp. 50-51) Nevertheless, all the elements shown above were used by Dickens as tools in order for us to understand even more Sissyââ¬â¢s personality and character, highlighting her creativity and optimism when facing difficult times. Dickens shows us that her creative, optimistic and attentive attitude was not only present when she was around her father but also through out the rest of her life, even so, most people did not see it as a rilliant attitude; instead they labeled her as an uneducated, an abstract and an unintelligent person. Howev er, the author uses this attitude to demonstrate that life is not only made out of facts but also of reality, logic and common sense. This situation is well illustrated in the following quote: ââ¬ËGirl number twenty,ââ¬â¢ said the gentleman, smiling in the calm strength of knowledge. Sissy blushed, and stood up. ââ¬ËSo you would carpet your room- or your husbandââ¬â¢s room, if you were a grown woman, and had a husband- with representations of flowers, would you,ââ¬â¢ said the gentleman. Why would you? ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËIf you please, sir, I am very fond of flowers,ââ¬â¢ returned the girl. ââ¬ËAnd is that why you would put tables and chairs upon them, and have people walking over them with heavy boots? ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËIt wouldnââ¬â¢t hurt them, sir. They wouldnââ¬â¢t crush and wither if you please, sir. They would be the pictures of what was very pretty and pleasant, and I would fancy-ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËAy, ay, ay! But you mustnââ¬â¢t fancy,ââ¬â¢ cried the gentleman, quite elated by coming so happily to his point. ââ¬ËThatââ¬â¢s it! You are never to fancy. ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËYou are not, Cecilia Jupe,ââ¬â¢ Thomas Gradgrind solemnly repeated, ââ¬Ëto do anything of that kind. ââ¬ËFact, fact, fact! ââ¬â¢ said the gentleman. And ââ¬ËFact, fact, fact! ââ¬â¢ repeated Thomas Gradgrind. ââ¬ËYou are to be in all things regulated and governed,ââ¬â¢ said the gentleman, ââ¬Ëby fact. â⬠(p. 10) Through this lines Dickens was trying to show how reasonable Sissy was in comparison to other characters, she knew that flowers were just an image that people could delight in and not just a simple definition. In addition, there is another important aspect of Sissyââ¬â¢s life which we find interesting to note: her social awareness. A good example to prove this is the following quote: ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ But today, for instance, Mr Mââ¬â¢Choakumchild was explaining to us about Natural Prosperity. ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËNational, I think it must have been,ââ¬â¢ observed Louisa. ââ¬ËYes, it was. ââ¬â But isnââ¬â¢t it the same? ââ¬â¢ she timidly asked. ââ¬ËYou had better say, National, as he said so,ââ¬â¢ returned Louisa, with her dry reserve. ââ¬ËNational Prosperity. And he said, Now, this schoolroom is a Nation. And in this nation, there are fifty millions of money. Isnââ¬â¢t this a prosperous nation? Girl number twenty, isnââ¬â¢t this a prosperous nation, and aââ¬â¢nââ¬â¢t you in a thriving state? ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËWhat did you say? ââ¬â¢ asked Louisa. ââ¬ËMiss Louisa, I said I didnââ¬â¢t know.I thought I couldnââ¬â¢t know whether it was a prosperous nation or not, and whether I was in a thriving state or not, unless I knew who had got the money, and whether any of it was mine. But that had nothing to do with it. It was not in the figures at all,ââ¬â¢ said Sissy, wiping her eyesâ⬠¦. â⬠(p. 48) Through this quote, Dickens gave us a fantastic explanat ion of his thoughts on the economy of the time through Sissyââ¬â¢s opinion; in other words, he was emphasizing his ideal economical pattern for society: everyone having an equal amount of richness in order to be a prosperous nation. One of the remarkable things about Sissy is that throughout the whole story, Dickens presents her as a unique girl with many exceptional traits, for instance, her loyalty and perseverance towards her fatherââ¬â¢s return, her compassion and attentive spirit towards the Gradgrind family, her respect for othersââ¬â¢ opinions and the one thing that make her the heroine of the story: her outstanding personality. Nevertheless, there are several times when the author mentions that just like any human being, Sissy doubted herself and at the same time wished to be someone else (Louisa).Dickens expressed it clearly on this extract: ââ¬ËIt would be a fine thing to be you, Miss Louisa! ââ¬â¢ she said, one night, when Louisa had endeavored to make her p erplexities for next day something clearer to her. ââ¬ËDo you think so? ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËI should know so much, Miss Louisa. All that is difficult to me now, would be so easy thenââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ â⬠¦ ââ¬ËHave I always hated you so much? ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËI hope not, for I have always loved you, and have always wished that you should know it. But you changed to me a little, shortly before you left home. Not that I wondered at it. You knew so much, and I knew so little, and it was so natural in many ways, going as you were among other friends, that I had nothing to complain of, and was not at all hurt. â⬠(Pp. 48, 182-183) At the same time, letting aside her desires to be like someone else, Cecilia did not let such a thing bring her down, instead she stood up and defended her territory and her ââ¬Å"ownâ⬠, becoming courageous enough to confront and to send away Louisaââ¬â¢s suitor who stood against everything that was right. The following quote reflects it: ââ¬ËMr Harthouse,ââ¬â¢ returned Sissy, with a blending of gentleness and steadiness that quite defeated him, and with a simple confidence in his being bound to do what she required, that held him at a singular disadvantage, ââ¬Ëthe only reparation that remains with you, is to leave here immediately and finally. I am quite sure that you can mitigate in no other way the wrong and harm you have done.I am quite sure that it is the only compensation you have left it in your power to make. I do not say that it is much, or that it is enough; but it is something, and it is necessary. Therefore, though without any other authority than I have given you, and even without the knowledge of any other person than yourself and myself, I ask you to depart from this place tonight, under an obligation never to return to it. â⬠(Pp. 188-189).Nonetheless, this was not the only an unselfish and brave act she performed; the previous action triggered the beginning of Sissy Jupe as the care-taker and th e protector of the Gradgrind family that even the father came to a place where he recognized Ceciliaââ¬â¢s help, not only towards him but also towards his wife and son; he finally accepted the fact that without Sissyââ¬â¢s presence they would have succumbed. In the following quote Dickens proves that at last ââ¬Å"Girl Number 20â⬠, the least expected to have the solution to all of the Gradgrindââ¬â¢s problems, became the moral and the grand victor of the story after all. Sissy has effected it, father. ââ¬â¢ He raised his eyes to where she stood, like a good fairy in his house, and said in a tone of softened gratitude and grateful kindness, ââ¬ËIt is always you, my child! â⬠(p. 222) Lastly, as the story ends our heroine is all we expected her to be, starting by being a great and faithful daughter, a help in time of need for those who surrounded her, and last but not least a good wife, a happy mother and a wonderful friend to her ââ¬Å"humbler fellow-creatu resâ⬠.But, happy Sissyââ¬â¢s happy children loving her; all children loving her; she, grown learned in childish lore; thinking no innocent and pretty fancy ever to be despised; trying hard to know her humbler fellow-creatures, and to beautify their lives of machinery and reality with those imaginative graces and delights, without which the heart of infancy will wither up, the sturdiest physical manhood will be morally stark death, and the plainest national prosperity figures can show, will be the Writing on the Wall,- she holding this course as part of no fantastic vow, or bond, or brotherhood, or sisterhood, or pledge, or covenant, or fancy dress, or fancy fair; but simply as a duty to be done,- did Louisa see these things of herself? â⬠(p. 238) As a conclusion, we dare to say that Dickens was the realist novelist far excellence; throughout the whole novel he expressed his criticism in a very audible voice, illustrating his thoughts and opinions on several social conc erns of his time. Additionally, he created a story and characters that were believable due to their resemblance with the real world; he made the reader understand that he was not making the situations up, but he was showing real common life.Nevertheless, it seems as if Dickens broke the pattern with Cecilia Jupe, when giving her the heroic part of the story and at the same time made her as an example of genuineness, boldness and bravery, even when her humble background, her eccentric education and all those things made her the contrary of what a Victorian Lady should be like. All situations she went through were against the idea of her being the heroine of the story, but ironically, Dickens chose her as if taking her from another world and inserting her into Victorian times, in order to make his point clear, which was: the role of the woman in a society like his. or, all art in general may be examined through critical eyes and have the same question presented in such scrutiny.à The purpose of this paper will be to examine the worth of The Milkproject and how it aids in examining people and products in their everyday life. There has been much debate as to the purpose of; in Oscar Wildeââ¬â¢s famous quote he says, ââ¬Å"All art is completely uselessâ⬠and while this may be the case in fact, since art does not serve some rudimentary purpose in propelling the human race forward into any evolutionary or revolutionary states, art must be approached from a different angle.à The theorists Dick Hig gins states that,Pop Art?à How could it play a part in the art of the future?à It is bland.à It is pure.à It uses elements of common life without comment, and so, by accepting the misery of this life and its aridityà so mutely, it condones them.à Pop and op are both dead, however, because they confine themselves, through the media which they employ, to the older functions of art, of decorating and suggesting grandeur, whatever the detailed content of their artistââ¬â¢s suggestions (Higgins 49).Thus, with this definition of the death of art through the lack of evolution it is willing to play in progressing forward into a new age of media a viewer may rightly surmise that the endeavors of the Milkproject are far more revolutionary than any other artistic movement being designed in this century.à It is with the inclusion of technology and the approach of applying the common life with something integral to the world such as milk and how and where it travels that this project will have a lasting impression in the art world. It is through diversity of art and the inclusion of different medias into a conglomeration art project that the Milkproject is able to transcend the usual boundaries of art and to delve into something more important, more human.à The project used photographs, sound recordings and live models and life to portray the transportation of milk from a farm into the houses of the general populace.à The integration involved in this journey is what beckons Higgins to recollect the diversity of Duchamp in his theory and to state that it is only through this mixture and inclusion of media that art is able to evolve, and evolve it does with the Milkproject. The true genius of the Milkproject is that is it interactive; with the audience as well as the participants.à The beauty of the project is that is focuses on something common in everyoneââ¬â¢s lives so that everyone has a basis for an interest in the project.à As this paper has previously quoted art seems useless:à from the dowdy baroque pieces to the overly large pop art media pieces, there seems to be no real connection between the lay person and art. With the Milkproject this foreignness is bypassed as milk is the main ingredient in the art, and the reactions of people to milk, its journey and process is all a part of the final project.à In Kaprowââ¬â¢s article ââ¬Å"Happeningsâ⬠in the New York Scene he describes how ââ¬ËHappeningsââ¬â¢ is an interactive based art experience, ââ¬Å"You come in as a spectator and maybe you discover youââ¬â¢re caught in it after all as you push things around like so much furnitureâ⬠(Kaprow 84).à This same process of being involved in the Milkproject despite not being the artist of the muse, is what propels the fundamental interest of the viewer. The idea behind the Milkproject as an artistic expression is only defined as such by the intermingled use of photography and voice.à This is why the project is such an important piece; because in most art pieces, the movement is static, the flowers remain the same through time, but with the human voice and the interaction of the product with the audience, the viewer or participant is able to relate on a more humanistic level with the project and thus transform it from a Happening into a thing of real life consequence: from the farm and whatever happens with the farm (financially, weather-wise, etc) to the mouth of the consumer.à Thus, the Milkproject transcends Kaprowââ¬â¢s Happening as he defines it,Happenings are events that, put simply, happen.à Though the best of them have a decided impactââ¬âthat is, we feel, ââ¬Ëhere is something importantââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬âthey appear to go nowhere and do not make any particular literary point.à In contrast to the arts of the past, they have no structured beginning, middle or end.à Their form is open-ended and fluid; nothing obvious is sought and therefo re nothing is won, except the certainty of a number of occurrences to which we are more than normally attentive.à They exist for a single performance, or only a few, and are gone forever as new ones take their place. (Kaprow 85).Thus, the Milkproject is not so clearly defined as art that has no ââ¬Ëstructured beginning, middle or endââ¬â¢ (Kaprow 85) but rather to the extent of the milkââ¬â¢s journey from teet to mouth of the consumer is found these three parts; excepting in the idea that the project itself is a continuation of the milkââ¬â¢s journey transform by the project into art.It is now clear that the Milkproject is a transformable art.à Thus, the art behind the project is not limited to the process of the milk traveling but extends to the reactions of the farmers and the consumer as is proven with the voice recorded tapes.à The audience in turn at the exhibition becomes part of this process as well, which makes the integrated media of the Milkproject evo lutionary in its concept.à This concept of mixed media and the extension of art into the audience is portrayed in Aarsethââ¬â¢s theory on literature,Where this new adaptation might prove to be a radical departure is in the way we shall use it to define textually independent of its traditional associates, the reader/receiver/audience and writer/sender/author.à This move, which might be seen as self-defenseâ⬠¦A text is not what we may read out of it, nor is it identical with what someone once wrote into it.à It is something more, a potential that can be realized only partially and only through its script (Aarseth 59).One must merely substitute the word literature and text with art and this passage clearly defines the purpose and impact of the Milkproject.Another interesting dynamic to the Milkproject is its use of the narrative.à As was mentioned with Higgins, art does not transcend itself often; that is to say that art does not cross from a painting into a sculptur e, and that is why media is such an important tool for this new era of art.à Most art does not speak for itself, does not lend the viewer with a cemented impression or underlying theory to its own existence as was illustrated in Kabrowââ¬â¢s Happenings.à With the inclusion of a running narrative in the Milkproject, a new dimension of art is being presented and very well incorporated into the integrity of the project. The inclusion of a narrative is not the only aspect of the genius of the Milkproject but the way in which it is included is what makes the narrative a work of art.à The narrative is typically thought of as a story telling device through literature.à In the dynamic of the Milkproject the narrative becomes a palpable part of the exhibition in that it is presented not through written words but electronic devices and thus remaking the project a part of a long lasting tradition of oral story telling, something the native Americans of other cultures pass on stor ies from generation to generation (de Certeau 95).à It is with this oral tradition being included in the project that a sense of human identity and connectedness from the Netherlands to America and further can be appreciated, as Landow expresses of the narrative and technology,Electronic textuality brings with it many changes, but not all concern loss, as so many critics of culture seem to believe.à Lyotard, for instance, claims that the new information technologies produce effects much like the journalistââ¬â¢s rewritingâ⬠¦but the evidence of hypertext works thus far created, both instructional and literary, suggests that on the contrary electronic linking graphs idiosyncrasy and personal association in particularly liberating ways.He grounds his charge on the doubtful claim which hypertext linking would seem to contradict, that the ââ¬Å"new technologies â⬠¦submit to exact calculation every inscription on whatever support:à visual and sound images, speech, mus ical lines, and finally writing itself,â⬠and he argues that ââ¬Å"the noteworthy result of this is not, as Baudrillard thinks, the constitution of an immense network of simulacraâ⬠but rather the great ââ¬Å"importance assumed by the concept of the bit, the unit of informationâ⬠(Landow 32).The importance then of the inclusion of the narrative through a technological device then is proven to be a necessary part in the Milkproject not only in a traditional art sense but in a cultural sense as it propels the human story forward by the means of the human ingenuity:à through the bit, through oral tradition by way of a story that is significant to the human race, and its progeny:à a farmerââ¬â¢s milk into the mouths of the consumer, is something that will always be of importance because of its nutrition as well as this projectââ¬â¢s ability to show that the world, the economy, cultures, are working in a globalizing fashion to sustain human life in all parts of the earth, thus art imitates nature (Guattari & Deleuze 2).The Milkproject extends the visual world and enters the verbal world so that the audience may better understand the significance of the work.à The emphasis of the verbal, or oral storytelling in this project is what makes the project all that much more human.à The implementation of the digital voice recordings along side the still motion shots taken from video footage is what humanizes the project and for the audience its what makes the project real, and strikes a cord of commonality, thus, not only is the audience member intrigued because of the element of milk, a product used by a large portion of the worldââ¬â¢s population but also the voiced concerns of the farmers and consumers are juxtaposed with the audience reactions as de Certeau states ,We could moreover extend this problematic to the relations between the act of writing and the written text, and even transpose it to the relationships between the ââ¬Ë handââ¬â¢ and the finished painting.à AT first isolated in the area of verbal communication, the speech act turns out to find only one of its applications there, and its linguistic modality is merely the first determination of a much more general distinction between the forms used in a system and the ways of using this system, that is, between two ââ¬Ëdifferent worlds,ââ¬â¢ since the ââ¬Ësame thingsââ¬â¢ are considered from two opposite formal viewpoints (de Certeau 98).Thus, the use of the narrative becomes a part of the exhibition in an intrinsic fashion. The focus of this paper has been on the inclusion of several styles of art in one artistic piece, the Milkproject.à Through the use of verbal narrative, mixed media, photographs, technology, and video the ââ¬Ëartistsââ¬â¢ of this project have been able to create a Happening which goes beyond the open-ended suggestion of Kabrow and into a story which develops through the journey of milk from udder to con sumer across continents. The use of GPS in this project was also a major player in extending the static components of art being non-transcendental (i.e. paintings canââ¬â¢t be sculptures and vice versa) and allows the project to be multi-dimensional and thus long lasting.à However, the stroke of genius in the Milkproject is the inclusion of various media in order to engage the audience in the reality of the milkââ¬â¢s journey. It is with this final statement of the project that the purpose of the project becomes apparent:à the audienceââ¬â¢s interaction, and reaction to the project is a part of the project if not the main purpose.à Thus, the journey of the milk does not end with the consumer but carries on into the audience and this is what allows the Milkproject to not be a stagnant art form but an interactive exhibition whose genius rests with the reality that the journeyââ¬â¢s participation hinges upon the viewer.à Thus, the journey of milk is found in its e nd with the art viewer.Work CitedAarseth, E. ââ¬Å"Nonlinearity and Literary Theory.â⬠Hyper/Text/Theory Landow,à à à à à à à George P. The interactions between these three organizations have facilitated terrorism on a global scale as the activities perpetrated by these groups have demonstrated. These formerly independent endeavors have not only began to collaborate with each other, but discernable trends have emerged due to their collaboration. In testimony given to the Senate Armed Services Committee, Michael A. Sheehan, assistant secretary of defense for special operations and low-intensity conflict for the United States Department of Justice, Terrorism, drug trafficking and other forms of transnational organized crime are increasingly intertwined (Parrish). Sheehan further comments, Nowhere is the link between transnational organized crime, insurgency and terrorism more apparent than in Afghanistan, where the Taliban continues to receive a large percentage of its revenue through heroin trade (Parrish). United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Senior Terrorism Prevention Officer Irka Kuleshnyk asserts, While it is difficult to establish how widely terrorist groups are involve in the illicit drug trade, or the breadth and nature of cooperation between these two criminal groups, the magnitude of the numbers involved make the relationship worrisome (Drug Trafficking and the Financing of Terrorism). The explosion that occurred at an oilrig in the Great Barrier Reef poses a situation that can lead to the total collapse of the company. Although Hypothetical has been absolved from all the blame, it still has a significant social responsibility to the community and the people living in this area, as well as the whole world. The company needs a form of public ââ¬Ëfriendshipââ¬â¢ in order to operate efficiently in the coming years, and obtain goodwill from governments, people, consumers, workers and even environmental experts who are all closely following the developments at the Great Barrier Reef.Although the problem has been technically solved, there still lies a considerable risk for the company, basing on previous experiences. The spill that occurred at the Gulf of Mexico in an oil rig owned by the giant oil company British Petroleum led to a massive backlash from all th e stakeholders. The company has faced numerous lawsuits, loss of consumer trusts and expensive compensation claims (Farrell, 2011, p.102). Although the crisis at the Great Barrier Reef is of a different scale compared to BPââ¬â¢s, there is a need to ensure that it is managed effectively to mitigate negative impaction.SWOT StrengthsHypothetical has managed to seal the exploded well; hence, there is no risk of further damage to the environment. In addition, the assessment of its other rigs throughout the world shows that there is no further risk to such a situation occurring and all the safety standards are keenly followed.WeaknessesThe company has already lost some employees and in the disaster and the massive spill has already taken some months to stop. Extensive damage to the ecosystem has already occurred.OpportunitiesAlthough damage has already occurred, the Australian government has been supportive, and everyone applauds the companyââ¬â¢s effort to stop the leak. The company can use this opportunity and the media attention that it is receiving to portray itself positively among the people, hence helping to improve its brand name (Reid, 2006, p.75).ThreatsThe company is the obvious target for blame for all the events that have transpired and almost everyone is expecting that the company will own up to the mistake. There is also a risk that people are viewing the situation from the mindset that was formed after the spill that occurred at the gulf of Mexico pitying a corporation against the government, environmental organizations and the public.Target publics Primary publicsThe main targets for crisis communication are the government leaders, trade unions and the environmental concern groups. This is because they are the influential groups that understand the magnitude of the problem and are in the places of influence to the public (Lawrence Dan, 2005, p. 211). Trade unions need to be ensured of the safety of workers, considering that six people died in the accident, while the government is the one expected by the public to act on their behalf. timothybowman148http://www.blogger.com/profile/02088043711162411869noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4885301002506464511.post-29707275452941962822019-12-08T21:47:00.001-08:002019-12-08T21:47:03.902-08:00Journal Of Environmental Research Health ââ¬Myassignmenthelp.Com Question: Discuss About The Journal Of Environmental Research Health? Answer: Introduction Modern gardens are usually characterized by streamlined, sleek and cultured styles. In most cases, the main goal of modern landscape architecture is to create gardens that have organized and controlled appearances that also increases the value of property besides creating spectacular views. But looking at the history of gardens, they have more uses beyond beauty and remarkable views. Some gardens are used for medical, treatment and/or healing purposes, relaxation, meeting points and productivity increase(Anderson, 2011)(Franklin, 2012); (Gray Birrell, 2014) (Lau, et al., 2014). Therefore gardens have been very essential components of buildings from the early days(Detweiler, et al., 2012). Regardless of the intended use, modern gardens comprise of common architectural features/elements that give them outstanding views. These elements must work collectively in harmony so as to achieve the intended purpose. This essay analyzes two design landscapes: Donnell Garden, Sonoma, California, USA designed by Thomas Church, and Residence Own House Garden, Ridgewood, New Jersey, USA designed by James C. Rose. The aspects discussed are: cultural context, design psychology, formal qualities and stylistic attributes. Donnell Garden is one of the masterpieces that were designed by Thomas Church, a renowned landscape architect, with the help of George Rockrise and Lawrence Halprin. Thomas Church was a pioneer of American modern landscape architecture and managed to establish a style referred to as California Garden, after getting inspiration from the U.S.s West Coast (Jere, 1993)(Treib, 2003). They designed the garden for Dewey and Jean Donnell family in Sonoma, California, USA. Up to date, Donnell Garden is still a modernist icon in American landscaping industry. The garden was completed in 1948 and it is on the hillside overlooking San Francisco Bays northern extensions. Figure 1 below shows the aerial view of Donnell Garden. Cultural Context Donnell Garden is a landscape garden with great importance for American landscape history, in cultural context. The garden was created after World War II and the Great Depression, the period when American landscape significantly revitalized. Thomas used art to express various elements of modernism in the garden with less attention to the surrounding physical setting. He designed the line of the edge of the kidney-shaped pool to resonate the patterns of waterways meandering across the nearby valley that was being overlooked by the terrace. Additionally, the pavers colours, plantings and rocks groupings reflect the form and colour of the extensive landscape and its features where Donnell Garden is located(Beattie, 2015). The garden was in the cattle ranch of family, which they used for picnicking. Church included rare, abstracted forms that made Donnell Garden very famous. His aim was to give the garden a modern look that provided the family with a cool place to relax, play, swim, barb eque, garden and entertain. He wanted the garden to complement the booming economy and rapidly growing population of California. When designing the garden, Church responded to particular site and client characteristics and at the same time explored new architectural styles and forms. In general, Donnell Garden was designed with a modernism attitude and that is why it has spectacular views, such as the unique pool and chairs around it. Design Philosophy The main design philosophy that Church applied when designing Donnell Garden was abstract modernism. Church was among the pioneers of abstract modernism in North American landscape architecture and he used this philosophy to design a spectacular garden and express himself in it. His design philosophy was influenced by historical events and his personal ideas and experience. The unique design of Donnell Garden was based on four principles: unity (compatibility between the garden and the house), function (the relationship between the garden and the specific needs of the client), simplicity (in terms of layout of the site, aesthetic and economic) and scale (aimed at creating pleasant relation between various management of the garden)(Church, 1995). Churchs idea was to create a garden that may be looked at from different viewpoints. On this basis, he created a garden that did not have a beginning or an end. The garden was designed in consideration of the usage requirements and nature of site(Treib, 2005). The whole idea of the garden was based on California Garden that aims at creating a modern garden that makes outdoor life more thrilling. He also included the living habits of local people and the environment of California. For instance, the garden has several trees that are complementary to the surrounding landscape (as shown in Figure 2 below) and the amorphous pool that was very unusual. Another philosophy he used was dividing the garden into separate rooms. For example, the garden has separate places for entrance yard, lawn, swimming pool, free space probably for basking in the sun, large platform, dining area, etc. Therefore Church designed Donnell Garden with an aim of making it unique and integrating the principles of unity, function, simplicity and scale. He wanted to go beyond the traditional norms of flowers in the gardens by introducing new elements and perspectives. Formal Qualities Formal qualities of Donnell Garden are reflected in aspects such as topography, vegetation, source of water, climate of the area, material and geomorphology. Donnell Garden is located in Sonoma, California, USA. The coordinates of the garden are 38.1830 N, 122.4521 W and the basic geomorphology in the area is sandstone. Topography of location of Donnell Garden is Sonoma County Coast. The general climate of the area is Mediterranean. This climate is warm and temperate generally mild and fairly dry with little rain throughout the year. But the rain usually increases during winter. The average annual rainfall in the area is 747.5 mm. There is always plenty of sun throughout the year with very minimal chances of snow. Average minimum temperature is 11 C while the maximum temperature is 23.2 C. The hottest and coldest months are July and December respectively. According to Koppen-Geiger climate classification, the climate of Sonoma is Csc(Climate-Data.Org, (n.d.)). The sources of water f or Donnell Garden are local reservoirs and streams, and other water projects by federal and state governments. Indigenous vegetation is predominant in the area with few exotic species. The common indigenous vegetation are Cornus nuttalli and Myrica californica. Different areas of the garden are made of different materials. The lawn is made of green and well maintained natural grass that gives a natural look and feel, as shown in Figure 3 below. The pavement ground of part of the large platform is concealed with redwood or wood of the U.S. fir. The floating deck is designed using checkerboard of wooden boards aimed at preserving existing trees and also creating more living space outdoors. The remaining part of the floor, which is the largest, is made of concrete. The pattern of the floor is grid and it creates a large space for the family and their friends to carry out different activities in the garden including, barbecue, playing and entertainment. The connection of the gardens contour is by curved and jagged lines. The kidney-shaped pool and sculptures smooth curves are similar to the S-shaped line of the distant San Francisco bay. The canopys frame conveys the impression of the skyline and wilderness of the bay in the garden. This is bec ause Donnell Garden is located on a raised ground that gives it a spectacular view overlooking the countryside. There is also the vegetation and trees surrounding the garden Stylistic Attributes These are basically features that make each garden standout from the others. Donnell Garden represents California Garden style. The gardens central part has a kidney-shaped swimming pool. The pools location and unique design makes it the focal visual point and center of recreational activities since most people in California preferred outdoor pools. The layout of the swimming pool also provides two segments for different functions. One section of the swimming pool is longer and deeper, with a springboard, as shown on Figure 4 below. This is mainly designed for adults swimming. The other section of the swimming pool is shallower and more secure. This is mainly designed for children. The swimming pool also has one spectacular feature smooth curved Adaline Kent sculpture. The sculpture is located at the center of the swimming pool (as shown in Figure 5 below) and it serves different functions. The first function is to separate the two sections of the swimming pool the deeper and shall ower areas. The sculpture also has a hole at its base, sizeable enough to draw children through it. The sculpture also acts as a small island in the pool where people can rest. The sculptures soft curves also repeated echoed other elements of the landscape such as curves of rivers and mountains thus complementing the garden and surrounding site. The design of this swimming pool was so unique and spectacular that it became Californias epitome of outdoor lifestyle(Trufelman, 2017). Therefore the design of Donnell Garden accommodated the needs of the family and the characteristics of the surrounding landscape. Another stylish attribute of Donnell Garden is the amorphous transition between different areas of the garden. Even though the garden was divided into separate rooms, transition from one room to another was formless. This showed inclination of Church towards Spanish renaissance art. But this was not just limited to transition between rooms in the garden but it was also extended to transition between the garden and the house i.e. outdoor and indoor living(Tunnard, 2014). Residence Own House Garden, Ridgewood, New Jersey, USA by James C. Rose Residence Own House Garden is a landscape iconic located in Ridgewood, New Jersey, USA. The garden was designed by James Rose for his own residence. This was the building where James Rose lived with his family. The garden is very significant in American history of modern landscape architecture as it shows the origin of modernism in landscape architecture. James Rose was a famous inventor of modernism in landscape architecture and he demonstrated his design in this garden. James Rose started his activism for modernism in landscape architecture while still in school. When studying in Harvard, he teamed up with his classmates Dan Kiley and Garrett Eckbo to rebel against conventional landscape designs and theories. He declined to follow the official style of Beaux-Arts architecture for seeing the landscapes as modern buildings pastoral setting. This led to his expulsion from Harvard. The three colleagues then started social action for modernism in landscape architecture. As a result of this, they wrote several articles explaining their landscape design philosophy and ideas(Cardasis, 1995). Cultural Context Residence Own Home Garden represents the genesis of modern landscape design in Northern America. Designed by one of the pioneers of modernism in landscape architecture, the garden has a strong cultural context. According to James Rose, gardens were part of homes that were supposed to be places where home owners and their friends could relax and have fun at no extra cost. In other words, James Rose wanted landscape architects in USA to move out of the norm and start thinking out of the box when designing gardens. To him, conventional landscape design styles were boring and wasteful. James Rose used several artistic elements when designing his private garden after Second World War. This private garden later made him famous not only in North America but all over the world. His design style was largely influenced by Renaissance movement, which advocated for modern landscape designing. During this period, pioneers of modern landscape architecture relied on three fundamental design princi ples. The first was to create garden accounting that were innovative with some intellectual forms. The second was to create an amorphous relationship between the indoor and outdoor environments of the building by applying a unified design style. The third was to balance between garden use and surrounding landscape. The push for these three design principles became dominant in architecture history between 1938 and 1941. Colour is one of the key elements that James Rose used in his private garden, as shown in Figure 6 below. He believed that combining different colours could give the garden different perspectives. Nevertheless, he made sure that the colors integrated with the surrounding landscape. To the north end of the house was James Roses studio, in the center was his mothers house and to the south was his sisters small guesthouse. He called the house a tiny village. Each interior of the house opened to a common area covered with trellis and paved with grass panels and flagstones. He also used rope panels and moveable bamboo screens to provide privacy for each area, as shown in Figure 7 below. He used this materials because he was against resource wastage and supported recycling and reuse of materials(Cardasis, 2017). According to James Rose, having a spectacular garden did not necessarily mean spending too much to build and construct it. On this garden, he used recycled materials such as salvag ed wood, old doors and railroad ties. His garden was planted with vines and ferns, resonating the structural character of wooden architecture. This was a strong statement of not disregarding traditional architecture that had been used in America for many years but instead being more creative about it. He gave all the recycled materials he used to create the garden new aesthetic and functional uses. Therefore James Rose focused on mimicking the rapid changes that happened in nature and peoples lifestyle without having negative environmental nor economic impacts. He believed that creativity, innovation and simplicity were the key tools to modern landscape architecture(Cardasis, 1994). Design Philosophy Abstract modernism was the basic design philosophy that James Rose applied when designing his private garden. He designed this garden when USA was going through transformation. This was post World War II period and a lot of changes were happening in the country, including population, lifestyle, economic activities and nature. As a landscape architect, James Rose saw the need for changes in landscape design styles. He wanted to create gardens that matched the needs of people and surroundings. Living with his mother and sister, James Rose understood the need for privacy, not for protection against mischievous acts but giving people the freedom to choose what to do when in outdoor. This is quite different from Donnell Garden by Thomas Church where the garden did not seem to have a beginning or an end. James Rose created privacy for each segment of the garden especially at the openings of the interiors. The work of James Rose was also influenced by Japanese design through seamless integr ation of outdoor and indoor rooms. This is a crucial trademark of modern design as landscape architects aim at creating outdoor spaces that complement indoor spaces. James Rose applied this very principle, which is linked to Japanese design, to his private garden. Another principle that James Rose applied was integration of the garden with the surrounding. There are many natural, native trees in the garden. This makes the garden to be properly integrated in the surrounding landscape. The trees are tall and green to give the garden a more natural look and feel. Another very interesting aspect of these trees is that they are also part of the garden structure. Some trees are seen to be penetrating inside the building and probably have a function to perform. This is very unique and thought-provoking even to todays landscape architects. Recyclability and reuse is another element that James Rose introduced in his private garden. A significant percentage of materials used in the garden were natural and recycled. He used old doors, railroad ties, salvaged wood, grass panels, flagstones, rope panels and bamboo screens, as shown in Figure 8 below. These are materials that were locally available and therefore cost less. This is a very crucial idea even in modern landscape architecture considering the growing concerns of global climate change. Recycling and reuse of materials and use of locally available materials are some of the practices that are being encouraged so as to reduce environmental impacts. So James Rose started the idea of modernism in landscape architecture with an aim of creating distinctive, functional and resource efficient gardens. Formal Qualities Reflection of formal qualities of Residence Own House Garden is done by considering aspects such as topography, vegetation, source of water, climate of the area, material and geomorphology of the location of the garden. It is important to analyze these aspects and evaluate their relationship with or influence on design of the garden. Residence Own House and Garden is located in Ridgewood, New Jersey, USA. The coordinates of Residence Own House Garden are 40 58 46 N, 074 07 00 W and the basic geomorphology in the area is sand shale rock extensions combined with sandstone. The topography where Residence Own House Garden is located is western Pennsylvania across Delaware River and Delaware southwest across Delaware Bay. The climatic zone of the area is hardiness zone and hot-summer humid continental climate. According to Koppen-Geiger climate classification, the climate of Ridgewood is Cfa (Humid Subtropical Climate). This climate is warm and temperate. The rainfall is plenty even du ring the driest month. The average annual rainfall in the area is 1248.1 mm. Average minimum temperature is 5.6 C while the maximum temperature is 16.9 C. The hottest and coldest months are July and January respectively. The main source of water in the area is long island sound. Indigenous vegetation is predominant in the area, including oak in northern forests and Pine Barrens in pine forests. The topography, climate, geomorphology, material, water source and vegetation of Ridgewood, New Jersey are very favorable for the ideas of Residence Own House Garden. Having an idea of creating exceptional gardens using locally available and recycled materials, James Rose has plenty of choices. Wood is the predominant material that James Rose used. Almost every section of the garden has a wooden element, including the benches, as shown in Figure 9 below. This is probably because the climate favored plant growth and therefore use of locally available materials was a good and cost-effective idea. Bamboos, grass panels and flagstones are the other natural materials used. The veins and ferns planted in the garden shows the areas favorable climatic conditions that are characterized by evenly distributed rainfall. Stylistic Attributes Residence Own House Garden has many stylistic attributes. The design philosophy of James Rose is to design a functional and modern garden with natural or locally available materials. James Rose was born in 1913 and dies in 1991. However, his philosophy is needed now and in the future than never before. Building sector contributes a significant amount of global carbon emissions and James Roses philosophy is among the encouraged strategies of reversing the current situation. Maybe James Rose saw what many were not seeing after World War II and that is why he rooted for his design philosophy. A great conservationist indeed. Most of the outdoor trellis in the garden were constructed around existing trees the best way to integrate a garden on a site without cutting down trees or demolishing other structures. The garden is very colorful through integration of natural trees and materials. Besides providing a place for relaxation and family activities, it also provides a place for work. It has common areas that are enclosed with trellis, grass panels and bamboo screens to protect the occupants from unnecessary disturbances. The wooden architectures structural character is also complemented with vines and ferns throughout. The predominance of recycled materials also show James Roses attitude towards material conservation. Residence Own House Garden has a central fountain sculpture at the centre of the garden, as shown in Figure 10 below. This is the most symbolic and representative design element of modern landscape architecture. Besides being a symbol of modern landscape architecture, the fountain also creates a cool, fresh and relaxing environment in the garden all year round. Conclusion Donnell Garden by Thomas Church and Residence Own House Garden by James Rose are two gardens that were designed by pioneers of modernism in landscape architecture. These two gardens did not just capture the attention of people in United States of America but they were and are still great works in the history of modern landscape architecture. The two gardens are similar and unique in equal measures. Both landscape architects wanted to create masterpieces that could represent their design philosophies of modern landscape architecture, and they truly did it successfully. Each of the gardens has a unique design philosophies, formal qualities and stylish attributes. For example, Donnell Garden has a central kidney-shaped swimming pool with smooth curved Adaline Kent sculpture while Residence Own House Garden has central fountain sculpture as their symbolic and representative elements of modern landscape architecture. James Rose also focused on avoiding wastage of resources by using recy cled, natural and locally available marketing. These two gardens are indeed a representation of the genesis of modern landscape architecture that should be emulated by stakeholders in landscape architecture field. References Anderson, B., 2011. This tape consisted of go-go based production. This had never been done before in hip- hop, this alone shows Wales resistant nature. He didnt want to conform to the typical production style that most rappers were using at the time of that release. Throughout that project, he consistently spoke completely truthfully about what he does, he never yapped about gunplay and drug-slinging, he never praised any of the negative connotations that are prominent in todays hip hop. One of the most prominent things in the hip-hop industry is the flashy lifestyle that most artists portray. The game is filled with chain flashing none flashing, and braggadocio. Wale denies these stereotypes by constantly displaying his proper knowledge of simple etiquette, be it through his lyrics or his actions. To me, wale is a genius trapped in a game filled with fake gangsters and trend-followers. Hose the song Golden Salvation because it speaks to the exact topic that I previously discussed. Basically, throughout the song Wale explains how papers boast diamond-flooded chains bearing the face of Jesus. But, while wearing these chains, the rappers arent serving Christ in any way, shape, or form. In fact, the Jesus piece is simply written off as another regular old piece of jewelry. Salvation is defined as deliverance from sin and its consequences. They expect the chain itself, the diamonds, and shiny components to deliver them to new heights in life, they completely ignore the face that the chain consists of; hence the name Golden Salvation. With this line: N*gas use me to shine, I been helping you Stunt, look, why these rapping dudes anti hit e in months? Wale shows that he believes that these young men particularly black men should go to Jesus more often and ask him for assistance in life instead of placing their destiny on living the typical flashy lifestyle. He follows this up with l dont ask for too much, colored in Wows, women will play you close, ad them hungry jokers will try and test yea, now yea confidence through the roof, still you show no respect kid, the good book sai d praise button so stuck in your ways you got my image appraised. With this, hes saying that Jesus doesnt ask for much, but if they boast his face on a monad encrusted chain, a bad omen will follow them and their chances of getting robbed will increase. Also, he uses a play on words with praise. Implying that the bible tells us to praise the lord but instead, they get his an appraisal on a chain bearing his face. This song speaks volumes to the terrible trends the rap industry tends to set and cause millions to follow. It also showcases Wales ability to drop knowledge on important topics in the black community and also do it in an intriguing way that requires you to not only listen, but also deeply think about the years. First of all, I personally believe that the DC-based artist Wale is the best lyricist in the industry currently. The way he flows over his ingenious choices of production and conveys his meaningful messages in a smooth way is simply amazing. I first discovered Wale when I was about 13 years old.The first work I heard from him was his mix tape 100 lies and running. This tape consisted of go-go based production. This had never been done before in hip-hop, this alone shows Wales resistant nature. He didnt want to conform to the typical production style that most rappers were using at the time of that release. Throughout that project, he consistently spoke completely truthfully about what he does, he never yapped about gunplay and drug-slinging, he never praised any of the negative connotations that are prominent In todays hip hop. The game is filled with chain flashing, money flashing, and braggadocio. Wale denies these stereotypes by constantly displaying his proper knowledge of simple etiquette, be it through his lyrics or his actions. To me, wale is a genius trapped in a game filled with fake gangsters and trend-followers. In a simple sense, wale is a trendsetter; he brings his own style to the table, he is his own man, which is something that Is always preached In the rap game but barely ever put on display.I chose the song Golden Salvation because It speaks to the exact topic that I previously discussed. Basically, throughout the song, Wale explains how rappers boast diamond-flooded chains bearing the face of Jesus. With this line: N*gas use me to shine, I been helping you stunt, look, why hose rapping dudes mint hit me in months? Wale shows that he believes that these young men particularly black men should go to Jesus more often and ask him for assistance In life Instead of placing their destiny on living the typical flashy lifestyle. He follows this up with l dont ask for too much, colored In Wows, women will play you close, ad them hungry Jokers will try and test yea, now yea confidence through the roof, still you show no respect kid, the good book sa id praise but you so stuck In your ways you got my image appraised. With this, hes saying that Jesus doesnt ask for much, ND their chances of getting robbed will increase. Also, he uses a play on words with praise.Implying that the bible tells us to praise the lord but instead, they get his an appraisal on a chain bearing his face. This song speaks volumes to the terrible trends the rap industry tends to set and cause millions to follow. It also showcases Wales ability to drop knowledge on important topics in the black community and also do it in an intriguing way that requires you to not only listen, but also deeply think about the lyrics. Lyrics: Pray Praises Give thanks To the Fad Holy Water Jesus pieceBut dont nobody want know Jesus peace, no [Verse 1 :] N*gas use me to shine I been helping you stunt Look why these rapping dudes anti hit me in months I dont ask for too much Covered in Wows Women gong play yea closer And them hungry Jokers gong try test yea Now they bumping your record Yea confidence through the roof Still yea show no respect kid The good book said pray But you so stuck in your ways You got my image appraised Why you sinning out wa iting Fornicating with women I sat right there on your table Dont bow your head for grace Though Im keeping you graceful Brothers was born to cheatThough I question who faithful Fast for me nope Blasphemy though Rap to it so racks up To match up with me froze How can a diamond supersede my wisdom I seen a reverend with five of me as he read his scripture This is bible readings to people with malice intentions With a Cuban attached On a secular scene I died for you all Now n*gas die over me [Hook:] Jesus piece Jesus piece Jesus piece But dont nobody want know Jesus peace [verse 2:] Sierra Leone diamonds LA to New York got me? In examination of each culture?s techniques, we find that they are in complete contrast of one another like their places on earth. Each system exemplifying one side of the extremes. We are left to ponder which of the two ideals are superior. Which arrangement of life will benefit the individual as well as society to a greater extent? The answer, however, lies not in the option mentioned above. Rather, the ideal life structure for anyone to be risen by is that which combines the two sides of the extremes thereby extracting the best of both worlds. The American upbringing is described as a "U" by the author. In such circumstance, youth and old age are the apexes of human constraint. The child is quickly taught through physical and psychological means that their wishes are irrelevant to what their parents deem ?ideal? for them. With the passing of time into adolescence and eventually adulthood, freedom is gradually fueled until financial independence is achieved. However, independence and free will are slowly siphoned during the first signs of mental deterioration at old age. One leaves the earth as they entered it under the care of others. In sharp contrast, the Japanese mannerism of raising children is noted by Benedict as an upside down ?U?; depicting the level of restraints one will experience throughout their life. The greatest amount of freedom occurs at the genesis and decline of the human body. In between the two tips of man?s lifeline, a psychological birdcage traps and stagnates the development of free human indulgence. Quite the reverse of what is seen here in North America but nonetheless a valid one. In any system, such as government, the wisest choice is a mixture between the two conventions of the extremes. In North America, and especially Canada, government is neither totally towards a capitalistic nor socialist, communist system. These governments have blended capitalistic with socialist, communist ideas. These nations possess private ownership, a capitalistic idea yet also have public education, a socialist, communist idea. Yet, could any of us imagine doing without either of these? The ideal human lifeline should be arranged no different from government itself. A median of the American and Japanese systems ? compromises of freedoms and restrictions throughout life. In the beginning, it is important that guidelines be set for the child when he/she is exposed to their new world. Firm disciplines are necessary to foster an understanding that they are not supreme in their new world. However, it is equally important to allow for a certain amount of freedom to maintain a loving and affectionate relationship. As one develops and matures into adulthood, independence should also be increased. That is not to say total freedom is allotted. Given in abundance, the end product is usually egotism and an inability to work and cooperate to others in the workplace. Certainly, humility must also be an ingredient in the solution. The final stage of life should see certain liberties taken away from the mentally deteriorated, yet the elderly deserve the right to ! decide their abilities and limitations. At this point in life of retirement, after decades of hard work, he/she has earned the right to enjoy life without restraints. A well balance between liberty and restriction throughout life is the key to a content, yet responsible, individual. Neither the American nor Japanese pattern of life tends to be complete. Each holds its strengths as well as weakness. In this world of stubborn and adamant behaviour, shouldn?t we all look towards a compromise? timothybowman148http://www.blogger.com/profile/02088043711162411869noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4885301002506464511.post-26071827458836368242019-11-22T22:23:00.001-08:002019-11-22T22:23:02.219-08:00Richard Nixons Native American Federal PolicyRichard Nixons Native American Federal Policy Modern American politics among various demographics can be traced along predictable lines when it comes to a two-party system, especially those of ethnic minorities. Although the civil rights movement enjoyed bipartisan support early on, it became split along regional lines with Southerners of both parties opposing it, resulting in the conservative Dixiecrats migrating to the Republican party. Today African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and Native Americans are typically associated with the liberal agenda of the Democrats. Historically, the conservative agenda of the Republican Party tended to be hostile to the needs of American Indians, especially during the mid-20th century, but ironically it was the Nixon administration that would bring much-needed change to Indian country. Crisis in the Wake of Termination Decades of federal policy toward American Indians overwhelmingly favored assimilation, even when the governments prior efforts toward forced assimilation were declared a failure as a result of the Merriam Report in 1924. Despite policies designed to reverse some of the damage by fostering greater self-government and a measure of tribal independence in the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934, the concept of improvement of the lives of Indians was still framed in terms of progress as American citizens, i.e. their ability to assimilate into the mainstream and evolve out of their existence as Indians. By 1953 a Republican-controlled Congress would adopt House Concurrent Resolution 108 which stated that at the earliest possible time [Indians should be] freed from all federal supervision and control and from all disabilities and limitations specially applicable to Indians. Thus, the problem was framed in terms of Indians political relationship to the United States, rather than a history of a buse stemming from broken treaties, perpetuating a relationship of domination. Resolution 108 signaled the new policy of termination in which tribal governments and reservations were to be dismantled once and for all by giving greater jurisdiction over Indian affairs to some states (in direct contradiction of the Constitution) and the relocation program which sent Indians away from their home reservations to large cities for jobs. During the termination years, more Indian lands were lost to federal control and private ownership and many tribes lost their federal recognition, effectively eradicating the political existence and identities of thousands of individual Indians and over 100 tribes. Activism, Uprising, and the Nixon Administration The ethnic nationalist movements among Black and Chicano communities fueled the mobilization for American Indians own activism and by 1969 the Alcatraz Island occupation was underway, grabbing the nations attention and creating a highly visible platform upon which Indians could air their centuries-long grievances. On July 8, 1970, President Nixon formally repudiated the termination policy (which was established ironically during his tenure as vice president) with a special message to Congress advocating for American Indian Self-determination. . . without the threat of eventual termination, assuring that the Indianâ⬠¦[could] assume control over his own life without being separated involuntarily from the tribal group. The next five years would see some of the most bitter struggles in Indian country, testing the Presidents commitment to Indian rights. In the latter part of 1972, the American Indian Movement (AIM) in conjunction with other American Indian rights groups convened the Trail of Broken Treaties caravan across the country to deliver a twenty point list of demands to the federal government. The caravan of several hundred Indian activists culminated in the week-long takeover of the Bureau of Indian Affairs building in Washington DC. Just a few months later in early 1973, was the 71-day armed confrontation in Wounded Knee, South Dakota between American Indian activists and the FBI in response to an epidemic of uninvestigated murders and the terrorist tactics of a federally-supported tribal government on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The heightening tensions across Indian country could no longer be ignored, nor would the public stand for more armed interventions and Indian deaths at the hands of federal officials. Thanks to the momentum of the civil rights movement Indians had become popular, or at least a force to be reckoned with and the Nixon administration seemed to grasp the wisdom of taking a pro-Indian stance. Nixons Influence on Indian Affairs During Nixons presidency, a number of great strides were made in federal Indian policy, as documented by the Nixon-era Center Library at Mountain State University. Among some of the most significant of those achievements are: The return of the sacred Blue Lake to the people of Taos Pueblo in 1970.The Menominee Restoration Act, restoring the recognition of the previously terminated tribe in 1973.In the same year, the Bureau of Indian Affairs budget was increased by 214% to a total of $1.2 billion. The establishment of the first special office on Indian Water Rights - A bill authorizing the Secretary of Agriculture to make direct and insured loans to Indian tribes through the Farmers Home Administration. The passage of the Indian Financing Act of 1974, which supported tribal commercial development. The filing of a landmark Supreme Court suit to protect Indian rights at Pyramid Lake.Pledged that all available BIA funds be arranged to fit priorities set by tribal governments themselves. In 1975 Congress passed the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act, perhaps the most significant piece of legislation for Native American rights since the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934. Although Nixon had resigned the presidency before being able to sign it, he had laid the groundwork for its passage. References Hoff, Joan. Countries such as Serbia, Guatemala, the former Soviet Union and even Rwanda have experienced genocide in the 20th century and such crimes have been punished based on the provisions of this convention. The convention has various articles which highlight the level of responsibility of each and every countryââ¬â¢s leadership in ensuring that genocide and crimes against humanity are prevented at all costs. For example, chapter 4 states that every individual, state or non-state actor shall be held individually responsible for abetting, financing, directly and indirectly participating and being complacent in genocide activities. Such provisions have assisted in ensuring that individuals are brought to book for allowing and participating in activities that are equivalent to genocide in different parts of the world. The international tribunal for Kosovo and Rwanda were all constituted on the premise of the genocide convention to try various cases of genocide against religious and tribal groups. This document is a conclusive documentation of the articles of the convention that has defined genocide and abuse of human rights as we know it today. Though changes have been done to the convention, the United Nations (1948) is an important document that has informed the decision of other international bodies and help in reducing incidence of abuse of human rights in the presence or absence of crisis. In the study of human rights and genocide, the United Nations (1948) provides an accurate historical encounter of how a convention that has defined international behavior of those in power was developed. This document has significantly contributed to the development of various tribunals aimed at providing justice to victims of genocide in countries such as Rwanda Kosovo where rampant human timothybowman148http://www.blogger.com/profile/02088043711162411869noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4885301002506464511.post-80802254130392683642019-11-19T13:16:00.001-08:002019-11-19T13:16:03.825-08:00Juvenille ofenders in criminal court Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 wordsJuvenille ofenders in criminal court - Essay Example This bias towards punishment and not rehabilitation is expressed by McCollum (as quoted in Redding 92) in support of the Federal law. The changes mean to satisfy concerns, increase juvenile justice efficiency and curb growth in juvenile offending. National transfer efforts make 2 percent of juvenile delinquency cases caused by judgeââ¬â¢s willingness to transfer, large numbers of offenders and less treatment options in the juvenile system. J.S. Attorney General Janet Reno (as quoted in Redding 93) asserts that behind this response is unexplained delinquency characterized by sharp increment in violent index crimes. The transfer consequences for juveniles stated in Kent v. United States 1966 are longer prison sentences, loss of juvenile protective and rehabilitative possibilities, potential abuse in adult prisons and loss of rights associated with felony convictions. Other sanctions include loss of voting and firearm rights; ineligibility for military service; felony record and declaration of felony status on employment; negative influence on future criminal processing, prosecutions and sentencing; and exposure t o capital punishment. As the US Department of Justice 1999 stated (Redding 121), effects of transferring juvenile offenders have not been clear with studies showing short term actual increase in recidivism and society reintegration problems. Transfer policies must be enacted to ensure a smooth transition and justice be served in a fair manner. Purposes of transfer such as deterrence and community protection have not been achieved as formal criminal processing, conviction and sentencing seem to have little merit and many adverse consequences. Transfers donââ¬â¢t seem to promote community protection and decrease juvenile offender reformation (Redding 95). This means that a new approach in reference to the transfer of the juveniles must be evaluated to ensure protection of the community is enhanced by the judicial system. They are the pre-school, primary school, high school and finally the tertiary institutions and the university. Admission into the universities or colleges involves the process in which students who have completed high school join tertiary education at universities and colleges. An educational system differs from one country to another. Some countries have self governing bodies which centralize the administration of standardized exams. Diversity refers to the process of recognizing and appreciating the individualsââ¬â¢ characteristics that make them unique so as to promote the celebration of the individual and collective achievement of those persons. Universities consists of individuals who contribute significantly to the growth of culture of the community through expressing their views on how to improve on the performance of an organization Diversity in universities. As teachers teach in universities, they always need to update their knowledge in their fields of specialization because of changing trends. Diverse systems in universities enable students to know in advance the type and quality of teaching and qualification they will receive. Benefits of diversity When an organization values diversity, it means that it values the local community as well as themselves. Different values are appreciated by the diverse organization . This kind of organization recognizes the fact that people with different backgrounds skills, attitude and experience brings about fresh ideas and perceptions. Diverse organizations encourage and harness various differences that make their services relevant and approachable. They also get a wide range of views exercised so that it can listen to them and meet the changing needs of its user, staff, volunteers and partners. Intellectual Diversity A review is done about the studentââ¬â¢s perception of students towards teachers who attempt to discuss politics in course other than political science in classrooms. Academic freedom should be allowed in college campuses for its easier to correct a situation in the classroom. On other hand arguments should be made to be one sided. For education, it is said to be implemented when students are provided with a variety of perspectives and encouraged to think for them. There are some suggestions given to ensure intellectual diversity at the same time protecting academic freedom, for instance establishing new academic programs political bias in student ââ¬âfunded groups. In conclusion, diversity helps us to see situations from different points of view and therefore assists one to accommodate changes when they arise. It is therefore necessary to learn about diversity so as to appreciate the different research agendas and priorities that may arise that may bring change to a community and thus lead to proper decision making processes within their organizations. Scott Fitzgerald :: essays research papers fc F. Scott Fitzgerald lived an amazing life throughout time, overcoming obstacles in his path and persevering through trials and tribulations. As a man who has gone through over four decades of experiencing an overwhelming amount of accomplishments, as well as hardships, F. Scott Fitzgerald is therefore acknowledged as a ââ¬Å"True Manâ⬠. In fact, his struggles through childhood, his transition to adulthood and his unstable literary career acknowledges him as a ââ¬Å"Real Manâ⬠who is more like a hero. à à à à à To begin with, F. Scott Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s childhood was a common one, like other children who grew up during the late nineteenth century. His origin played a key role in how he came to live his life according to the ââ¬Å"American Dreamâ⬠. Of the Irish ethnicity, F. Scott Fitzgerald was born September 24, 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota. His family life was one to be considered average for the late 1800s. His mother, Mary Mc Quilla, and father, Edward Fitzgerald were middle class Americans who worked hard to maintain a stable family. Mary Mc Quillan, was the daughter of an Irish immigrant who became wealthy as a wholesale grocer in St. Paul. Both were Catholics. Edward Fitzgerald failed as a manufacturer of wicker furniture in St. Paul, and he became a salesman for Procter & Gamble in upstate New York. After he was dismissed in 1908, when his son was twelve, the family returned to St. Paul and lived comfortably on Mary Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s inheritance. Both wer e of the Catholic decent. F. Scott Fitzgerald, named after his distant cousin, Francis Scott Key, the composer of the Star Spangled Banner, was the only child born to his fortunate parents. Due to several issues, his family moved regularly. à à à à à Also, F. Scott Fitzgerald transition to adulthood came about with a dramatic twist as he experienced ups and downs as any normal being would. Starting as a young lad and entering the field of becoming a ââ¬Å"manâ⬠, Francis began to start a new life. He entered Princeton University in 1913 but allowed other prerogatives to take over his priorities. For example, Fitzgerald neglected his studies for his literary apprenticeship. He wrote the scripts and lyrics for the Princeton Triangle Club musicals and was a contributor to the Princeton Tiger humor magazine and the Nassau Literary Magazine. His college friends included Edmund Wilson and John Peale Bishop. On academic probation and unlikely to graduate, Fitzgerald joined the army in 1917 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the infantry. timothybowman148http://www.blogger.com/profile/02088043711162411869noreply@blogger.com0
